Anticipatory Set:

Students might have some basic understanding of Tzu Chi. For example,
- Tzu Chi is founded in Taiwan.
- Who is Dharma Master Cheng Yen and history of Tzu Chi
- What are four missions and eight foot steps
- Uniform of Tzu Chi
- Tzu Chi music
- Even some new students don't understand what Tzu Chi is about, they could learn from other students

Direct Instruction (60min - 80min)

Program flow
-
MC (Master of Ceremonies) announces the group partitions and game rules (5 minutes)
- MC can pick up some questions (e.g. uniforms,...) if students haven't picked them
-
Responsibility of other five coordinators
- stay on stage to record scores
- update maps of ships when missiles fired from students
- update the news on two whiteboards
- (answers and missile coordinates will be sent to 5 coordinators from group representatives)
- Game plays (75 minutes). Not all questions need to be answered if time is not allowed
- Reward and "punishment" ceremony (10 minutes)

MC (Master of Ceremonies) announces the group partitions and game rules (5 minutes)

The class with be conducted with the form of "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" and "Battleship"
-
- "Battleship" are replaced with "Dharma Boat".
- "Missile" are replaced with "Lotus".
- The mission is to build Dharma Boats rather than destroying battleships.
- To increase of fun of the program, a variation of "question->answer->score" has been derived to "question->answer->missile->battleship"
- The class will be conducted with questions shown on stage and answers to be provided by students.
- Students will choose the questions.

Questions can be shown on stage with the form of "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?" or "Jeopardy"
- Number of Lotuses are associated with each question
- The coordinates associated with each lotus are provided by students at the same time answering slips are given

Answers and the Lotus coordinates will be given by students
- Jigsaw puzzles contain partial answers to questions. Students need to collect all correct puzzles in order to answer questions correctly
- All Jigsaw puzzles (printouts or handwriting) will be passed to students in advance
- To ease the program flow, coordinates of Lotuses will be written on the paper (or dot stickers) at the same time when students turn in their answer slips. Students will write coordinates of Lotuses on dot stickers. All dot stickers will be passed to the 5 coordinators along with the answer slips

Build the Dharma Boats in order to win the award
- Coordinates of Lotuses will be recorded on the map if the corresponding teams answer the question correctly
- Number of hits and misses will be passed back to the team (either on the whiteboard or on the paper slips)
- If any Dharma Boat is built by a team, an announcement will be made on the whiteboard
- Students are divided into 10 teams or more according to their seating. Teams are named after 8 footprints.
- Each team will take roll to pick up the question they preferred. MC will repeat the question of pick on stage.

All teams will be given 2 minutes to answer the question and to prepare the coordinates of missiles. Answers will be chosen and ordered by students to be passed to coordinators.
- Four sections of 30-second Tzu Chi music will be played during the 2-minute time

Awards are given by the following criteria.
- The team with the highest number of Dharma Boats being sunken.
- If there is a tie on the number of Dharma Boats being built, the team with the most of number Lotuses wins

- We'll spend more time on presenting answers in photos or videos once the questions are answered.

Simple forms of competition
- We don't encourage tense competition. For all teams with the correct answers will get the points. For teams that have wrong answers will get points deducted. Teams can choose not to answer questions for which don't get points.

Team members:
- One will be the lead to pick up questions and to present answers. Student can probably take turns to be the lead.
- Other members need to pay attention to the videos or images in order to provide answers

Closure (10 min):
- A short speech to conclude what students learn today
- For the team with the best score, a simple present will be given to team members
- For the team with the least score, there will be "punishment" which the team will go up to the stage to perform (dance, sing, ..)
- Advisers need to reset/clear the setting of wireless network

Required Materials and Equipment:
- PPT file for the "Lotus Nursery" game.
- Answering slips.
- Game rules.
- There will no seat arranged. Students will sit on the ground. Advisers need to figure out a way to lead students in.
- Rewards. Jin Sin bookmarks.
- One Tzu Chi music MP3 to have two sections of 30-second play time
- Song for the "punishment": Happy Face (3'28")
