    • Encourage students to find what Tzu Chi is about
    • Understand how Tzu Chi is stated

    • What world disasters Tzu Chi has been helping with

    • Explore Tzu Chi information over the Internet
  • Opening Video (12 minutes)

  • Anticipatory Set:

    • Students might have some basic understanding of Tzu Chi. For example,
      • Tzu Chi is founded in Taiwan.
      • Who is Dharma Master Cheng Yen.
      • What are four missions and eight foot steps.
      • Uniform of Tzu Chi
  • Direct Instruction (60min - 80min)

    • Program flow
      • MC (Master of Ceremonies) announces the group partitions and game rules (5 minutes)
        • The other two MC stay in the central aisle to pass microphone and to collect answers
      • Play one more video that is related to Mission of Charity (10 minutes)
        • Advisers set up wireless setting of laptops
      • Game plays (60 minutes). Not all questions need to be answered if time is not allowed
      • Reward and "punishment" ceremony (8 minutes)
    • The class with be conducted with the form of Jeopardy
      • Students are divided into 8 teams according to their seating. Team are named after 8 footprints.
      • There are six categories of questions. Each category has 5 questions.
      • Each team will take roll to pick up the question they preferred. One microphone will be passed among team leaders to pick up the question.
      • All teams will be given 1 minute to answer the question. Answers will be written on a index card and given to MC.
        • Two sections of 30-second Tzu Chi music will be played during the 1-minute time
      • All teams can tap to the "Watson" members to get answers from the computer.
      • Scores are given by the following criteria.
        • Full score: questions are answered within 30 seconds
        • Half score: questions are answered between 30 and 60 seconds
        • Zero score: no answer
        • Deduction of score: questions are answered wrongly, half-score will be deducted
        • Bonus score: teams are extremely quiet on coming up answers
        • For example, a team can get 200 points if they choose a 200-pt question and they or other team come up the correct answer within 30 seconds. For teams answering the question after 30 seconds and before 60 seconds, they will get 100 points. However, teams with wrong answers will deduct 100 points.
      • One parent/adviser volunteer needs to update the scores accordingly

    • Use of index cards (scrap paper)
      • To encourage teamwork, each team is encourage to reach answers by passing Index cards. By doing so, we hope to reduce the noise level students are creating. In the meantime, more students can be involved.
      • Index cards are to be used to hand in answers to the MC
    • Simple forms of competition
      • We don't encourage tense competition. For all teams with the correct answers will get the points. For teams that have wrong answers will get points deducted. Teams can choose not to answer questions for which don't get points.
    • Team members:
      • One will be the lead to pick up questions and to present answers. Student can probably take turns to be the lead.
      • Some members will be the "Watson" team to find answers through the computers
      • Other members need to pay attention to the videos or images in order to provide answers
  • Closure (10 min):

    • A short speech to conclude what students learn today
    • For the team with the best score, a simple present will be given to team members
    • For the team with the least score, there will be "punishment" which the team will go up to the stage to perform (dance, sing, ..)
    • Advisers need to reset/clear the setting of wireless network
  • Required Materials and Equipment:

    • There will no seat arranged. Students will sit on the ground. Advisers need to figure out a way to lead students in.
    • Laptops/netbooks x 9 (8 teams + 1 backup). Please make sure laptops/netbooks can run up to 1.5 hous on battery as no AC cord will be provided. Advisers can bring laptops/netbooks during the Adviser training on August (date will be determined later).
    • 2 Laptop/netbook (one backup) installed with the Jeopardy software (need Power Point)
    • Jeopardy game pre-installed and configured
    • Index cards. Jason will provide index cards.
    • Pencils. 3 - 4 pencils per group.
    • Rewards. Jin Sin bookmarks.
    • One Tzu Chi music MP3 to have two sections of 30-second play time
    • Song for the "punishment": Happy Face (3'28")
  • Assessment and Follow-Up (optional)

    • Ask students to find unanswered questions from Tzu Chi web sites
  • Agenda for the follow-up meeting

    • How well students are participating in the game?
    • How new students are interacting with old students?
